Cross Country Preview

How did the cross country teams prepare for the 2011 season? Senior Kimberlee Yalango gives some insight.

This past preseason, the fall sports teams could be heard all around Muhlenberg. You could hear the whistles at football practice, the squeak of sneakers on the volleyball court, and the clanks of sticks from the field hockey team. However, the cross country team was pretty silent on campus. Instead, we were getting in the miles all around Allentown for the long season ahead of us.

Cross country is a unique sport since it’s pretty difficult to observe our practices (unless you’re running with us). As a first-year cross country athlete at Muhlenberg myself, I had my own misconceptions about the sport and what preseason would be like.

But cross country isn’t all just running, and preseason entails much more than hitting the pavement for a few miles every day. The team started the week with a run at the scenic Lehigh Valley Parkway, followed by an icing session in the cool creek that runs along the trail (the more daring ones even went for a full dip in the frigid waters). The traditional 3k time trial was the highlight of Tuesday, which showcased several impressive performances under the lights on Muhlenberg’s track.

The team also ventured to Jacobsburg State Park to meet up and run with East Stroudsburg’s cross country team. In between the major trips, the team did workouts in Trexler Park, went on runs around the neighborhoods of Allentown, and dipped in the pool for an aqua jogging workout. We also did doubles [running in the morning and evening to break up the miles] and focused on our strength training with new core workouts and lifting programs.

While putting in the work was important during the preseason, an equally essential component was the bonding of the team. Getting to know each other was especially important this season as we are welcoming a large amount of freshmen to the team.  Runs are the perfect opportunities to get to know fellow team members as there’s plenty of time for talking on five- or six-mile runs.

We also bonded over an ice cream social at the captains’ house and at the Rose Bowl for the annual preseason bowling competition. Teams were divided among the men and women’s roster, and it became clear after a few frames that there’s a reason many of us aren’t involved in hand-eye coordination sports!

Over the course of the week, both the men and women got to spend a lot of quality time together over meals and hangouts. While both teams are young, there is an incredible amount of potential for this season.

For the women, we have an excited and eager group of incoming freshmen at our base and at the top have two returning seniors with a plethora of experience and knowledge.  We’re led by our two junior captains, Sam Mayden and Erica Bash, who both are talented and well-respected athletes who have prematurely stood out as leaders on the team. Our main focus this season is for all our athletes to stay healthy and to keep a positive attitude throughout the long and strenuous season. While it’s still very early, I think it’s fair to say that this cross country team has a lot to look forward to and has several surprises in store.

Field Hockey Preview

Senior Courtney DeAngelis writes about the outlook for the 2011 Mule field hockey team:

First, I want to welcome all the freshmen who are reading this to the ‘Berg!  And to the upperclassmen, I hope you’re all as happy to be back as I am. I’m pleased to report that the Muhlenberg field hockey team was seemingly unfazed by the earthquake, hurricane and the power outage across campus, and still managed to soldier through preseason.  But, aside from those calamities, things have been running smoothly for us so far.

Now to be perfectly frank, for those of you who followed us last season, you already know it was a rough one. There are fewer things that are more frustrating than to not perform at your level of play, and this was a recurring issue for us. Nonetheless, I am completely confident that our team will bounce back from last year and experience success. We do NOT want a repeat of last season, and we’re determined to ensure that this does not happen.

Jaclyn Todisco celebrates after a Mule goal in last week's scrimmage against FDU-Florham.

We’re not going to dwell on the past, or linger on what should have, could have, or would have been; what happened, happened, and all of the upperclassmen just want to move forward. As a senior, I’m especially grateful to have another shot to prove to the conference what we’re really capable of, and we’re hoping to really shock everyone this season.

Another big change this season is our size – with the addition of thirteen freshmen, we’re up to 32 girls! I’ll be perfectly honest and admit that I was initially a bit nervous about having such a large class, and how it would change our team dynamic. They were like a small army coming in the first day, and my biggest concern was how I’d ever remember all of their names.

Fortunately, spending ten (give or take a few) hours a day together for a week straight provided plenty of opportunities to get to know everyone, and with the help of some good old fashioned name games and team bonding activities, everyone seems to be clicking really well.

So all in all, we’re ready to move on and surprise the conference.  We know we’re competing against some of the top DIII programs in the nation, but we’re ready for the challenge and we’re eager for our first game this upcoming Friday.

Hope to see you all there at some home games this year!

Introducing “The MuhlBox”

And now for something completely different …

Well, not completely different. This daily blog will be a companion site to the Muhlenberg College athletics website (www.muhlenberg.edu/main/athletics). Both sites will cover Mule sports – the teams and their athletes and coaches. It’s just that the blog will come from a different angle.

Think of the Muhlenberg College athletics website as the news section of a newspaper, and The MuhlBox as the life section. Here, we’ll go beyond the results, statistics and releases to bring our teams to life.

What does that mean, exactly? We’re not 100% sure yet – as this is a new venture for the 2011-12 year, it will no doubt evolve over time. But there will be more feature-type stories and first-person accounts: Scheduled for the coming week, we’ll read outlooks for field hockey and women’s cross country from team members, as well as an account of the volleyball team’s trip to Ohio for a tournament. We’ll also have trivia questions at least once a week and looks ahead to important games.

The MuhlBox invites input from anyone with an interest in Muhlenberg College athletics. If you have something to contribute, please post a comment or contact us at falk@muhlenberg.edu.

The first delivery to The MuhlBox is scheduled for tomorrow. Thanks for reading!
