Athletes of the Week

for contests between January 23 and January 29

Female Athlete of the Week – Tara Keegan, Track & Field

Keegan had a busy and successful day at the Muhlenberg Invitational, placing in four events. She won the long jump and triple jump, led off the second-place 4×400 relay team and finished sixth in the 55 meters. Keegan landed in third and fifth in the triple and long jumps, respectively, on the Centennial Conference performance list, and in third place on Muhlenberg’s all-time list in the triple jump.

Male Athlete of the Week – Spencer Liddic, Basketball

Liddic shot 60.6 percent from the field while averaging 17.0 points and 7.7 rebounds to lead the Mules to a 2-1 week. The two wins came in Centennial Conference games, putting Muhlenberg right back in the thick of the playoff chase. Liddic scored a game-high 27 points in a 79-69 win against Haverford that snapped a three-game losing streak. He also recorded his 39th career double-double (two short of the CC record) in a non-conference loss to DeSales. During the week, Liddic moved into third place on the Mules’ all-time scoring list with 1,574 career points.

Weekend Preview

We had a preview of tonight’s indoor track and field meet in The MuhlBox yesterday. Here’s what to look for on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball at Johns Hopkins, 3:00

The top two teams in the Centennial Conference standings meet for the second time in 13 days. Johns Hopkins (16-2, 11-2) won the first meeting, 76-67.

Muhlenberg (14-3, 9-3) is returning to Baltimore for the first time since winning the CC title there last season. Although it is a trip many fans dread, the Mules have won five of their last seven games at Johns Hopkins (counting one against Gettysburg in last year’s CC playoffs).

Since the league’s inaugural season in 1993-94, these two teams have by far the best record in CC games, and they have combined for 10 titles. Johns Hopkins is 241-59 (.803), Muhlenberg is 233-75 (.756), and the next-best percentage is .648.

Men’s Basketball at Johns Hopkins, 1:00

After snapping a three-game skid with a home win against Haverford on Wednesday, the Mules will look to make it two in a row against the team that handed them the first of their five losses in a six-game span.

Muhlenberg led the first meeting, 38-28, at halftime, but was outscored 47-19 in the second half. Johns Hopkins was 4-1 in the CC after that game but has fallen on hard times since. The Blue Jays are in a three-way tie for third with a 6-5 league mark, one game ahead of Muhlenberg.

The Mules have won their last three games in Baltimore, and the last one they lost (in 2008) was in triple overtime.

Game MVPs will be named for both teams following the game as part of Wall-O’Mahony Alumni Basketball Weekend, named in honor of two former JHU basketball players who died in the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Wrestling at Ursinus with Stevens and Merchant Marine, 12:00

No chance of getting snowed out this week. The Mules finally begin their Centennial Conference dual-meet schedule with a quad match at Ursinus.

Some tough competition awaits: Stevens is ranked 29th in Division III, Merchant Marine is the four-time defending CC champion, and Ursinus is undefeated in duals this season.

Weekend Preview

It’s the first Saturday of the winter season in which all five Muhlenberg teams are scheduled to compete … and it’s supposed to snow. Here’s what to look for if everything goes on as scheduled:

Basketball doubleheader at Washington (Saturday, women at 2, men at 4)

Chestertown will be the site for two pivotal games in the Centennial Conference standings.

The 14th-ranked Muhlenberg women (13-2, 8-2) will try to keep pace with Johns Hopkins (a half-game ahead in the CC) against a Washington team that is having an outstanding season. The Shorewomen (11-5, 6-5) have won nine of their last 10, with their only loss coming at Johns Hopkins.

Washington gave the Mules a tough battle when the teams met in Allentown in early December. Muhlenberg had a 15-point second-half lead slashed to five before holding on for a 71-63 victory.

The Mules lead the all-time series 32-4, but their only series loss in the last 16 years came in the 2006-07 season in Chestertown when they were nationally ranked (23rd).

In the men’s standings, it is Muhlenberg (10-5, 4-5) that is looking up at Washington (10-6, 6-3). The Shoremen won their last two games on the road against teams that handed the Mules their two biggest losses of the season (Franklin & Marshall and Johns Hopkins).

Muhlenberg hasn’t had much success at the Cain Center, winning just four times in 19 trips since the start of CC play in 1994. Then again, Washington hadn’t won in Allentown since 1989 before pulling out a 96-93 victory in overtime in the first meeting this season.

Indoor Track & Field at Lehigh Multi & Invite (Saturday, 11:00)

After getting their feet wet at Kutztown last week, the Mules will start to get more of a feel of where they stand in their second meet of the season. The teams are improving the level of competition (at a Division I meet) and the quality of the facility (they will be allowed to wear spikes), which should make for faster times.

Several athletes who did not compete at Kutztown will make their season debuts, and the women will line up 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams.

Wrestling at Gettysburg with Johns Hopkins (Saturday, 12:00)

Muhlenberg kicks off its Centennial Conference dual-meet season with a tri-match at Gettysburg. Although the Mules do not have enough wrestlers to be successful in dual meets, the individual bouts are important for seeding at the CC Championships.

Dream to Read

Tuesday afternoon, the members of the Muhlenberg men’s and women’s basketball teams visited Jefferson Elementary School in Allentown to take part in “Dream to Read.”

The players read books to the first- and second-grade students about the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his work to connect communities and work together toward shared goals. After reading, the players helped the students decorate placemats with images of their own dreams for the future, which will be donated to the Meals on Wheels program.

Some students even got a chance to do the “Tooty Ta” dance with the players after finishing their placemats.

“It’s always great to come out and read to these students,” senior Katy Rossino (above) said. “It’s easy to forget just how lucky we all are, and hopefully we were able to give these kids an idea of what can happen when you pursue your goals.”

“Dream to Read” is an annual event and collaboration among Jefferson Elementary School, Muhlenberg College and the Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley. The Volunteer Center donates books to each classroom as well as t-shirts for all the students.

Win-Win Proposition

Bus rides home have been pretty enjoyable for the Muhlenberg men’s and women’s basketball teams. Of course when both teams win as much as they have this season, just about everything feels better.

Thanks to two of the best starts in program history, the Mules find themselves in some pretty select company when it comes to wins and losses. At the beginning of the week, Muhlenberg was one of just three programs in Division III (out of roughly 400) to have both teams combine for two or fewer losses.

The women's team cheers in the background following the men's game-winning shot at Moravian.

And even though the men’s squad (9-3) fell last night, it is still off to its best start since 2002. Muhlenberg is one of just 10 programs in the country that has suffered no more than three combined losses.

The hot starts have created an infectious culture of winning, which according to senior Kathleen Naddaff has helped both squads feed off of each other’s success.

“We hang out a lot, so we always love to see the men’s team win,” she said. “We cheer them on, and seeing them win makes us want to go out and win even more. It’s really cool to see Muhlenberg basketball, as a whole, ranking up there with some of the best in the country.”

A key to the success has been their prolific offenses. Entering the week, Muhlenberg was one of just six schools in the NCAA, regardless of division (roughly 1,000 schools), to have both teams averaging more than 80 points per game.

The women (11-0), who rank second in Division III in scoring through Sunday’s games, have used their high-scoring ways to rank third in the country in scoring margin (24.1 points per game). The men, meanwhile, check in at No. 40 (12.1 points per game).

Aside from being friends off the court, the two teams are some of each other’s biggest fans.

During doubleheaders, the men’s squad is there supporting the women’s team. And when the men take the floor, the women’s team is in the stands cheering them on.

According to Liddic, seeing the women win helps get the winning juices flowing for the men’s team.

“It’s always great to see them get a big win,” Liddic said. “That kind of pumps us up and makes us want to go out and get one too. We hang out a lot both on game days and outside of basketball, and I think we definitely feed off of each other.”

One very noticeable difference this season has been the liveliness of the post-game bus rides.

When the teams split on the road, one squad is in the mood to celebrate while the other is dealing with a loss. But when the Mules sweep a doubleheader, like they did at McDaniel on Saturday, the trips home seem to pass by much more quickly and are a lot more fun.

That joyous feeling is one that both teams hope to experience a lot more as the conference season heats up. And if the two teams keep playing at a high level, Naddaff said there’s no reason why it can’t continue beyond the regular season.

“We like to joke around and have fun on the bus,” she said. “And when we both win, you can definitely tell it’s a little louder and everybody’s happy. We’re both off to pretty good starts, and hopefully we can keep it up and get both teams into the postseason.”

Athletes/Plays of the Week

For the first week of 2012, we not only have athletes of the week, but also plays of the week.

Female Athlete of the Week – Kate Clawson, Basketball

Clawson scored 30 points on 68.8 percent shooting from the field and pulled down 10 rebounds in a pair of wins for the Mules. She tied for the team lead with nine points against Dickinson, then poured in a career-high 21 – including Muhlenberg’s last seven of the game – at McDaniel.

Female Play of the Week – Alexandra Chili’s pass

Late in the first half against McDaniel, Chili threw a behind-the-back pass in stride to Alita Zabrecky for a fastbreak layup that drew oohs and aahs from the crowd. Click here to watch video of the play.

Male Athlete of the Week – Spencer Liddic, Basketball

Liddic had game highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead Muhlenberg to a 71-70 win at McDaniel in its first game of 2012. Liddic was 10-of-14 from the field and scored 16 points in the second half, including eight in the last 5:30 as the Mules overcame a 10-point deficit. His jumper kicked off a game-ending 10-1 run in the last two minutes, and his rebound of a missed free throw started the possession that ended with the winning points.

Male Play of the Week – Matt O’Hara’s pass

With the Mules scrambling to catch up in the final minute, O’Hara gathered a tipped offensive rebound, took a quick shot, then hustled after the rebound and touched a pass to Malique Killing in the corner. Killing drained a three to make the score 70-69 with 28 seconds left. Click here to watch video of the play.

Plays of the Week

Both basketball teams returned from finals to pick up wins in their 2011 finales over the weekend. Here are the top plays from thise games.

Female Play of the Week – Kathleen Naddaff plays point guard

Muhlenberg already has four very good point guards, but Kathleen Naddaff looked like she was auditioning for the position early in the second half against Albright. After blocking a shot, the 6-1 starting center grabbed the ball and led the fast break, dribbling down the middle of the court and delivering a perfect bounce pass to Alita Zabrecky on her left for a layup.

The basket gave undefeated Muhlenberg a 48-24 lead en route to an 80-47 win.

Male Play of the Week – Hunter Forsman’s dunk

Forsman finished with style during a game-turning run in the Mules’ 83-78 win against Drew, converting a pass from Spencer Liddic into an emphatic dunk with 9:35 left in the second half.

The field goal was the second straight for Forsman, who scored on a putback on Muhlenberg’s previous possession. Those were his only two field goals of the game, but they kicked off a 14-0 run that turned a seven-point deficit into a seven-point lead. Forsman had four of his five points and four of his nine rebounds in the run.

Plays of the Week

Instead of our usual athletes of the week, this Monday we bring you plays of the week for contests between November 28 and December 4.

Female Play of the Week – Alita Zabrecky’s crazy shot

Zabrecky got two points for the basket but many more for creativity on this shot late in the first half of Saturday’s game against Washington. With the Mules leading 28-22 and about 2:40 to play in the half, Zabrecky chased down a long rebound of a missed three-pointer and dribbled the length of the court. Anticipating contact when she got into the lane, she flung the ball up with her right (non-shooting) hand, and it went off the glass and in. She got the foul call as well, but missed the free throw.

The basket gave Muhlenberg its biggest lead (30-22) to that point. The Mules led by as many as 15 in the second half and went on to win, 71-63. Zabrecky finished with a game-high 18 points.

Click here to watch video of the shot. Note the Washington coach putting her hands on her head in disbelief.

Male Play of the Week – Austin Curry’s game-tying three

It was desperation time for Muhlenberg against Washington on Saturday – trailing by three with time ticking down. After the Mules’ initial attempt at a game-tying shot missed, AJ Dean snagged the rebound and found Curry, who was on the wing, cutting to the corner. Although a Shoreman player got a hand in his face, Curry drained the shot, tying the score at 79.

Curry made another last-gasp three in overtime for the last of his 14 points, but Washington won, 96-93.

Weekend Preview

It’s the last full weekend of athletic events in the year 2011.

Basketball Doubleheader vs. Washington College (Saturday, women at 2, men at 4)

Both basketball teams will be playing at home for the first time since winning the Scotty Wood Tournament two weeks ago. Since then, the women have remained undefeated with a pair of wins while climbing up to No. 13 in the national poll, and the men have gone 3-1 with a tournament championship at Gallaudet.

The Mule teams have a combined record of 11-1. The women have won their last two games by 15 points each, and the men have taken their last two by 40 and 23.

That’s not good news for the Washington teams on what is traditionally a difficult trip for them anyway. Since the start of Centennial Conference play, neither the Shorewomen or the Shoremen have won at Memorial Hall. The Shorewomen (2-2 this year) are winless all-time in Allentown, and the Shoremen (2-3) haven’t won at Muhlenberg since the 1989 Scotty Wood Tournament.

Wrestling at Messiah Petrofes Invitational (Friday, Saturday)

Muhlenberg visits this pretigious tournament (which used to be hosted by Lebanon Valley) for the 29th time in the last 32 years.
